Many of Dickens’s books were funny and entertaining, but they were also very important works that talked about problems that affected a lot of people at the time. A lot of his work was inspired by his own life growing up in England. Charles Dickens’s Childhood Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in a city called Portsmouth, in England. After growing up in Portsmouth his family moved to London in 1822, when Dickens was ten years old. His family often struggled financially, and his father ended up in a lot of trouble for not paying back the money he’d borrowed.
